How to Get Rid of Textured Walls

How to Get Rid of Textured Walls: Methods and Tips

To learn how to get rid of textured walls, first identify the texture, the underlying surface and whether the wall has been painted. Depending on those conditions, you may be able to scrape away the texture, apply a skim coat or use another resurfacing method. The right approach prevents unnecessary drywall damage and makes the finished wall easier to prime and paint.

TL;DR

  • Scrape texture: Often suitable for certain unpainted, water softenable textures when the underlying surface is sound and the material is confirmed safe to disturb.
  • Apply skim coat: A practical option for painted texture, firmly bonded finishes or surfaces where scraping would cause excessive damage. It covers the texture rather than removing it.
  • Identify wall material first: Drywall and plaster respond differently to moisture, scraping and sanding. A method that works on one surface may damage another.
  • Protect yourself and the room: Control dust, wear suitable protective equipment and investigate possible asbestos or lead before disturbing older materials.
  • Know when to get help: Extensive texture, failing paint, damaged plaster, suspected hazardous coatings and large uneven areas may require professional assessment.
How to Get Rid of Textured Walls

1. Identify Texture and Wall Material Before Starting

The first decision is whether existing finish can be removed without damaging wall beneath it. Texture that looks similar from across a room may behave very differently once you begin working on it.

Common types of wall texture

1. Orange peel

Small, rounded bumps resembling citrus skin. This finish is often relatively shallow, so a skim coat may cover it without requiring complete removal. Scraping alone may leave uneven patches.

2. Knockdown

Irregular raised patches with flattened tops. Its uneven profile can be difficult to remove uniformly, particularly if the wall has multiple layers of paint. Skim coating is often worth considering.

3. Stomp or brush texture

Repeating arcs, fans or broad brush marks formed in joint compound. Deep texture patterns may require extensive leveling, so applying a skim coat can be more practical than scraping off every ridge.

4. Heavy stippled or popcorn like finishes

Prominent bumps or rough deposits can be difficult to level. Some coatings are designed for ceilings rather than walls, but similar looking materials may appear on either surface. Identify the material and check for hazards before disturbing it.

Determine whether the wall is drywall or plaster

Drywall consists of gypsum panels with a paper facing. Plaster is a hardened coating that may sit over wood or metal lath, masonry or another backing. Both can have textured finishes, but their response to scraping and moisture differs.

  • Drywall: The paper facing can tear if you scrape aggressively or allow too much water to soak into it. Damaged paper may need sealing and repair before new joint compound is applied.
  • Plaster: A sound plaster wall may tolerate some surface preparation, but old, cracked, hollow sounding or loose plaster can break away in chunks. Adding water or applying force to an unstable surface can worsen the damage.
  • Previously repaired walls: Patches may contain different materials and have different levels of hardness or absorption. These areas can become visible through the final paint if they are not leveled and primed correctly.

Look at exposed edges near an existing opening, such as a doorway, if you can do so without damaging the finish. A small inspection opening made by a qualified professional may be necessary when the wall construction is unclear.

Do not assume that texture is harmless joint compound simply because it resembles drywall mud. Older decorative coatings require special caution, as discussed below.

2. Check These Conditions Before Removing Wall Texture

Before choosing a method, inspect the wall under good lighting. A work light held at a shallow angle can reveal ridges, dents, bubbling paint and uneven patches that ordinary overhead lighting hides. Check the following:

  • Paint condition: Is the paint firmly attached, peeling, blistering or flaking? Loose paint must be addressed before resurfacing and the cause of any blistering should be identified.
  • Texture adhesion: Is the texture firmly bonded or can it be seen separating from the wall? A loose finish is not reliable base for skim coat.
  • Moisture: Look for water stains, soft areas, recurring mold or dampness. Fix leaks and moisture problems before covering the surface.
  • Wall flatness: Check for bowed areas, prominent seams and large dents. Texture removal will not correct a crooked wall or structural movement.
  • Previous coatings: Multiple layers of paint can make scraping and wetting less effective. The new finish may need to go over the existing texture rather than beneath it.
  • Age of the building: Older coatings and paint may contain hazardous materials. Establish what the surface contains before sanding, scraping, drilling or applying moisture.

These checks help determine whether the goal should be complete texture removal, surface leveling or repair followed by resurfacing.

3. Choose Right Method: Scraping, Skim Coating or Sanding

There is no single best method for every textured wall. The most effective approach depends on how the texture was applied, how strongly it is bonded, whether it has been painted and what lies underneath.

Method 1: Scrape away the texture

Best for suitable unpainted finishes Scraping removes raised material rather than hiding it. It may work when the texture is water softenable, securely identified as safe to disturb and applied over a sound surface. Painted or very hard texture may resist this approach.

Method 2: Apply a skim coat

Best for many painted textures A skim coat is a thin layer of joint compound spread over the wall to fill the texture and create a smoother surface. It is often preferable when the existing finish is firmly attached but difficult to remove.

Method 3: Remove loose material and repair

When texture or paint is already failing, loose material may need to be removed and the damaged substrate repaired. If the wall is unstable, stop rather than applying new compound over it.

Method 4: Sand or mechanically level the surface

Limited sanding can smooth small ridges or dried compound after the surface is safe to work on. Aggressive sanding of an entire textured wall can generate substantial dust, damage drywall facing and create more repair work. Mechanical removal should be chosen only after the material and appropriate dust controls are established.

Can you remove texture from painted walls?

Yes, sometimes. However, paint can prevent water from reaching the texture beneath it, making wet scraping ineffective. A thick or glossy coating may also make it harder for new joint compound to bond reliably without the correct preparation.

If the paint is sound and the texture is firmly attached, skim coating is often a practical alternative. The wall must be clean, stable and prepared according to the joint compound manufacturer’s instructions. Glossy or otherwise difficult surfaces may require a compatible bonding primer.

Do not apply joint compound over peeling paint or use water and aggressive scraping to force the finish off. If paint’s age or composition raises a lead concern, testing and appropriate safety procedures come first.

Is scraping better than skim coating?

Neither method is universally better. Scraping removes existing texture, which can reduce the amount of new compound needed. But it may be messy, labor intensive and damaging if the finish is painted, hard or applied over fragile drywall.

Skim coating leaves the original texture underneath and creates a new surface above it. This avoids trying to remove every ridge, but it requires careful application and may take multiple coats to achieve a uniform finish. Deep texture can also require more compound and more drying time.

The right choice is the one that produces a stable, flat surface without creating unnecessary damage.

4. Tools and Supplies for Wall Texture Removal

Gather the right equipment before beginning. The tools needed for scraping differ from those required for skim coating and the condition of the wall may change what is safe to use.

Basic tools and materials

Surface inspection

  • Bright work light, pencil and a small straightedge.

Room protection

  • Drop cloths, plastic sheeting, painter’s tape and protective coverings for furniture.

Scraping, if suitable

  • Broad drywall knife or suitable hand scraper with a controlled, non aggressive edge.

Skim coating

  • Joint compound suitable for the application, a mud pan and wide drywall knives.

Surface repairs

  • Compatible patching compound, drywall repair materials and primer for any damaged paper or repaired areas.

Smoothing

  • Fine sanding tools or a suitable sanding pole with dust collection, if sanding is appropriate.

Finishing

  • Primer compatible with the finished surface and interior wall paint.

Personal protection

  • Safety glasses, gloves, suitable work clothing and appropriate respiratory protection for identified hazards.

A drywall knife is useful for spreading compound and removing small amounts of loose material, but it should not be used to force hard texture off a fragile wall. Likewise, a power sander is not automatically the fastest or best choice. The surface and the dust hazards determine whether mechanical sanding is appropriate.

Read product label and technical data sheet before selecting joint compound, primer or other coatings. Different materials have different requirements for adhesion, application thickness, drying and recoating.

5. How to Remove Suitable Wall Texture Step by Step

The following procedure is for a wall whose texture has been identified as safe to disturb and is suitable for scraping. It is not a universal procedure for every textured surface.

1. Empty and isolate the work area

Move furniture out of the room if possible. Cover anything that must remain, protect the floor and use plastic sheeting to limit dust and debris spreading into adjacent spaces.

Cover or protect vents as appropriate for the work and keep dust from entering HVAC equipment. Shut down affected air circulation where necessary, following safe procedures for the home’s heating and cooling system. Keep children and pets out of the work area.

Check before continuing: Make sure the wall material has been assessed, the room is protected and there is a safe cleanup plan.

2. Test a small, inconspicuous section

If the surface is confirmed safe to disturb, test a small area in a low visibility location. For a suitable unpainted, water softenable texture, a lightly dampened sponge may help loosen the material. Avoid saturating the wall.

Give the moisture time to work according to the material’s response, then use a broad scraper at a shallow angle with light pressure. The goal is to lift the texture, not cut into the wall.

Stop if the finish does not soften, the paint remains intact over the texture, the drywall paper starts tearing or the plaster begins breaking away.

Check before continuing: The texture should release without deep gouges, widespread paper damage or loose plaster. If it does not, reconsider the method.

3. Remove only material that releases readily

Work in manageable sections rather than attacking the entire room at once. Use controlled strokes and avoid digging the blade into the wall to remove every remaining mark.

Some residue may remain even when most of the texture has been removed. Trying to scrape a stubborn thin layer completely clean can do more harm than good. A suitable repair or skim coat may provide a better base for the final finish.

Collect debris carefully. Do not dry sweep potentially hazardous dust or use an ordinary vacuum on suspected asbestos containing material.

4. Allow surface to dry and inspect it

Once suitable scraping is complete, allow the wall to dry fully. The required time depends on how much moisture was used, the wall construction, ventilation and room conditions.

Inspect the exposed surface under angled light. Look for torn paper, shallow gouges, raised seams, cracks, loose compound and areas where the texture remains.

Do not cover a damp wall or attempt to hide unstable material under new compound. Repair the substrate first.

5. Repair and level the wall

Fill small depressions and gouges with compatible repair compound. Damaged drywall paper may require a suitable sealer before applying joint compound, because exposed paper can blister or lift when it becomes wet.

Use thin, controlled applications rather than trying to fill every depression in one heavy pass. Let each application dry or set according to the product instructions, then assess whether another coat is needed.

If the wall remains irregular, skim coating may be more efficient than continuing to scrape isolated patches.

6. How to Skim Coat Textured Walls for a Smooth Finish

Skim coating is often a good solution for firmly bonded, painted texture that would be difficult or damaging to scrape off. It covers the existing finish with a thin layer of joint compound, creating a new surface that can be prepared for paint.

USG identifies joint compound as suitable for skim coating, but the compound must be appropriate for the particular substrate and application. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparation and drying.

1. Confirm the existing finish is stable

Remove or repair loose paint and texture only after confirming the materials are safe to disturb. Clean away surface contamination and prepare glossy or difficult finishes according to the selected compound’s requirements.

If the paint is peeling over a large area, investigate why it is failing. Applying compound over a weak paint layer will not make that layer bond more securely.

2. Repair obvious defects

Fill holes, dents and damaged joints before covering the wall. Repair cracks according to their cause and severity. A crack caused by movement or a recurring moisture problem may return if the underlying issue remains.

Seal exposed drywall paper or other surfaces when required by the repair system. Let repairs dry or cure before proceeding.

3. Apply thin layer of joint compound

Use a wide drywall knife to spread a thin, even layer across the surface. Work in manageable sections, keeping blade at controlled angle and feathering edges so they blend into surrounding wall.

A skim coat is not the same as a thick layer of plaster. Heavy applications can sag, shrink, dry unevenly and become difficult to level. Deep texture may require more than one application.

4. Let the compound dry completely

Drying depends on the product, application thickness, temperature, humidity and airflow. Do not rely on fixed number of hours for every wall.

Drying type compounds lose moisture as they dry. Setting type compounds harden through a chemical reaction, but the surface still needs to meet the manufacturer’s requirements before the next coating is applied. A surface that appears dry on the outside may still be damp underneath. Applying another layer or primer too early can lead to finishing problems.

5. Inspect and apply another coat if necessary

Hold a work light close to the wall to reveal ridges, knife marks and shallow depressions. Apply another thin coat where needed, feathering outward to avoid creating noticeable humps.

Several thin applications are generally easier to control than one thick layer. If the wall has substantial unevenness, severe damage or deep texture, consider having a professional assess whether skim coating alone will achieve the desired result.

6. Sand only when appropriate

Once the compound is fully dry, lightly sand high spots and visible tool marks if the product instructions call for sanding. Use the least aggressive method that produces the required surface.

Excessive sanding can expose underlying texture, damage drywall paper and create additional dust. Vacuum dust with suitable equipment and remove remaining residue using a method compatible with the primer and compound.

Inspect the entire wall again before priming. A smooth looking wall in ordinary light may still show defects once the final paint dries.

7. How to Prepare, Prime and Paint the Finished Wall

Removing or covering the texture is only part of the job. The final appearance depends on the quality of the surface preparation and the compatibility of the coatings.

Repair and clean the surface

Before priming, confirm that:

  • All compound is dry and firmly attached.
  • Gouges, pinholes and ridges have been corrected.
  • Sanding dust and other contamination have been removed.
  • Any damaged drywall paper has been treated as required.
  • The wall is free from unresolved moisture problems.

Do not use paint to conceal defects that should have been corrected during surface preparation.

Choose the correct primer

Primer helps establish a consistent surface for the finish coat, but not every primer performs the same function.

  • Drywall or joint compound primer: Helps equalize absorption across repaired and newly coated areas.
  • Sealing primer: May be needed for certain stains or damaged, porous surfaces.
  • Bonding primer: May be appropriate for certain difficult existing finishes when specified by the coating system.

Use the primer recommended for the actual surface and intended paint. A stain blocking product is not automatically the best choice for every skim coated wall and a general purpose primer may not be suitable for every existing coating.

Apply the finish paint

Once the primer has dried according to its instructions, inspect the wall again. Apply the finish paint at the recommended coverage rate and follow the specified recoat interval.

Paint sheen affects how surface defects appear. Flat finishes generally reflect less light and may disguise minor imperfections better than glossier finishes. However, sheen cannot compensate for a poorly leveled wall.

For a smooth finish, the goal is a consistent surface, not simply a uniform paint color. Strong light from windows or wall fixtures can highlight small irregularities, so inspect the wall under the lighting it will normally receive.

8. Common Mistakes That Make Wall Texture Removal Harder

A wall can look worse after texture removal if the preparation method damages the surface or the next coating is applied too soon. These are the mistakes most likely to create additional work.

  • Using too much water: Excess moisture can soften drywall paper, weaken some finishes and damage plaster. Use moisture only when the identified material and removal method allow it.
  • Scraping with excessive force: Deep gouges and torn paper often require more repair than the original texture. Stop when the finish resists the scraper.
  • Applying compound over loose paint: The new coating may detach along with the weak paint beneath it. Stabilize the surface before resurfacing.
  • Trying to achieve perfection with sanding: Aggressive sanding can expose drywall paper and create unnecessary dust. Use compound to correct depressions instead of sanding deeper into the wall.
  • Applying thick coats to save time: Thick compound can dry unevenly and leave visible ridges. Multiple thin coats usually provide better control.
  • Painting before the wall is ready: Moisture, dust and uneven absorption can interfere with the finished appearance. Confirm the surface is dry, clean and properly primed.
  • Ignoring the cause of wall damage: Leaks, condensation and movement can damage the new finish if the underlying problem remains.

One additional mistake is assuming that every uneven area is texture. A wall may have poorly finished drywall joints, damaged plaster or structural irregularities beneath decorative coating. Identifying the actual problem prevents wasted effort.

9. Safety Precautions for Older Textured Walls

Safety needs to be considered before any scraping, sanding or wetting begins.

Asbestos in older textured coatings

Some older textured paints, wall coatings and patching compounds may contain asbestos. You cannot determine whether a material contains asbestos simply by looking at it.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends having suspect materials sampled by a properly trained and accredited asbestos professional before renovation that would disturb them. Do not scrape, sand, drill or collect samples yourself from a suspect surface. Improper sampling or removal can release hazardous fibers.

If testing confirms asbestos, or the material must be treated as asbestos containing, consult a qualified asbestos professional about the appropriate next steps. Leaving the material undisturbed or covering it may be preferable to removal in some circumstances.

Lead based paint in older homes

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead based paint. Scraping and sanding can release contaminated dust, creating exposure risks for occupants and workers.

The EPA recommends lead safe renovation practices and advises homeowners to consider hiring a lead safe certified contractor for work that could disturb lead paint. Contractors performing covered renovation work in pre 1978 housing must comply with applicable certification and work practice requirements.

If the age or composition of the coating is uncertain, pause the project and arrange appropriate testing or assessment. Ordinary dust masks, household vacuums and plastic floor coverings alone do not make hazardous-material removal safe.

10. DIY or Professional Wall Texture Removal?

DIY work may be reasonable for a small, accessible wall with a confirmed safe finish, sound drywall and shallow texture. Large rooms, deep patterns, fragile plaster and painted surfaces often require more preparation than homeowners initially expect.

How long does the work take?

There is no reliable single timeline for every project. The total duration depends on the wall area, texture depth, number of coats, drying conditions, repairs and desired finish.

A small wall with shallow texture may require relatively little active work. A whole room with painted knockdown texture could require several rounds of preparation, compound application, drying, inspection and painting. Large repairs or moisture problems can extend the schedule further.

Remember to distinguish active labor from elapsed time. Compound may need to dry between applications even when no one is actively working on wall.

What does textured wall removal cost?

Costs vary with the amount of surface to be treated, the chosen method, local labor rates and the condition of the wall. Rather than relying on a generic price per square foot, compare estimates based on the actual scope. Ask whether the estimate includes:

  • Furniture and floor protection.
  • Texture removal or skim coating.
  • Drywall or plaster repairs.
  • Dust control and cleanup.
  • Primer and finish paint.
  • Additional coats needed to achieve the requested finish.
  • Testing or specialist work if hazardous materials are suspected.

A lower initial estimate may not include the repairs needed after scraping or the extra coats required to cover deep texture. Compare the finished result and included work, not just the removal method.

When should you hire a professional?

Consider professional help if the texture covers several rooms, the wall is badly damaged, painted texture will not release or plaster is loose or cracked. Professional assessment is also advisable when you need a highly uniform finish under strong natural or artificial lighting.

Suspected asbestos or lead calls for the appropriate qualified specialist and safety procedures, not simply a general painting contractor with standard tools.

Conclusion

Getting rid of textured walls is a surface preparation project, not just a scraping job. The best results come from identifying the material, choosing between removal and resurfacing, repairing the underlying wall and allowing each coating to dry properly before painting.

Before painting, make sure the wall is smooth, clean and properly primed. If the texture is difficult to remove or the surface needs extensive repairs, a professional assessment can help you determine the best way to prepare the walls. Tony is a great house painter and does a high-quality job. I was very busy with work so I gave him my house keys and when I came back everything was perfect. The cracked ceilings were greatly fixed, a great job of painting the walls, everything was clean, and there were no drops in the floor. It was done in time and in great quality. I highly recommend him to others as you’ll be satisfied with the work and the price of the company!

Pro A&M Painting is amazing! Tony was extremely responsive, communicative, and knowledgable. He gave me a quote within days of the initial reach out, and was the most competitive quote I received after reaching out to multiple painters. Tony and team painted the entire first floor of my house, ceiling, walls, trim and doors as well as the stairway to my second floor and the second floor walls and ceiling. They completed the project in just TWO days and did an incredible job. They left my house spotless and we couldn't be happier with their work. I will use them again in the future for all my paint projects and refer them to anyone looking for a reliable painter who does great work at an affordable price and gets the job done fast! I couldn't be happier with my experience from start to finish with Pro A&M Painting! Thanks for making my home feel fresh and new again!

Can't thank Tony and his team enough for the great job they did. Painted the entire interior of our home as well as the exterior door/trim for the garage. They did all of this in 4 days!! Would recommend them for any painting work. Very reasonable price and very responsive. Also did a few extra items that we didn't expect including staying late on the last day of the job which was a Friday to finish installing new door knobs on our exterior doors. Thank you again Tony and team!

Tony @ Pro A&M Painting LLC was so easy and convenient to work with. He went out of his way to ensure my new condo was freshly painted and ready to go before I planned on moving in. He took care of everything as far as the painting and even professionally cleaned my carpets as well. His work was immaculate and his customer service skills are just as good and the price was well worth it in my opinion. I highly recommend Pro A&M to anyone looking to make improvements to their living space. Mine looks amazing now. Thank you!

PRO A&M Painting was by far the best offer we got out of 5-10 offers we considered locally and we were very impressed with the quality of the work and the speed at which they completed the work.
